Receding chins seem to create a great concern, and chin augmentation is more common in cosmetic surgical practice than chin reduction. Many patients with a minor deficiency do well with an artificial implant made of materials selected for their safety and efficiency. The surgeon will make an incision in either the mouth or under the chin areas to make an incision and create a pocket to receive a correctly sized implant. The surgery is generally done under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis and usually requires about an hour or less, to make the incisions, position the implant and suture.

Postoperatively, the patient will be prescribed antibiotics and fitted with a chin dressing. Swelling and bruising and possibly some numbness are to be expected for at least a week or two. The internal sutures will dissolve on their own and any external sutures will be removed when the chin incisions are sufficiently healed. A soft diet will be prescribed for two to three weeks and the `overcorrected' appearance will give way gradually to a well shaped chin in vertical alignment with the patient's lower lip. This subtle change in the shape of the chin often means a striking shift in the aesthetics of the patient's face. Chin implantation is often performed in combination with neck liposuction for a more pleasing neck and chin profile.
