The implant and reduction procedures are safe, and patients are generally pleased with the results. Complications are rare and usually minor. Studies on the synthetic materials making up the facial implants have not shown any correlation with systemic disease or medical problems. There are reports of slight bone erosion under some facial implants. However, this is not considered significant and shouldn't cause any problems for the patient in the long term. Likewise, the development of surgical wound infection is uncommon. The antibiotics prescribed before or after surgery normally prevent any postoperative infection. However, as in cosmetic or any surgical procedure, infection is always a risk, even if minimal, in spite of meticulous surgical technique. In this case, the implant may be removed along with any devices to secure it in position. Numbness in the affected area is the most common concern expressed by patients, and sensation usually returns over a period of months. Permanent numbness is extremely rare.
